As the 2011 ANPA Annual Meeting and Scientific Conference opens today, Mr. Rahm Emanuel, the new Mayor of Chicago, welcomed members to the Windy City.
In a statement issued by the Mayor, he hailed ANPA as a worthy representative of “over 4,000 Nigerian born physicians, dentists, and allied health professionals in the United States and Canada and the Caribbean”.
Addressing the local Chicago/Northwest Indiana chapter of the organization, Mayor Emanuel commended ANPA for its public outreach efforts to provide free health screenings, support the Haymarlet’s Thanksgiving Dinner, and donate food and clothing to several shelters across the city of Chicago. ANPA also regularly participates in wellness outreach initiatives including workshops and symposia for health care professionals and the general public.
The chair of ANPA Chicago/Northwest chapter, Dr. Adedeji Adefuye thanked Mayor Emanuel for his strong support of ANPA. He noted that Mr. Emanuel has a solid reputation among immigrant communities because he recognizes the important part they play in building America’s vibrant and inclusive democracy.
During Mayor Emanuel’s tenure as President Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff, he played a role in the historic appointment of ANPA member, Dr. Funmi Olapade to the National Cancer Advisory Board.
