ANPA: Help Address Global Health Disparities

The Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), founded twenty-two years ago is a 501(c)3 organization committed to help improve healthcare  We are passionate about helping to change the downward trajectory of healthcare in Nigeria as documented in our blog

We are engaged with private health care providers in the country such as the Faith Alive Hospital in Jos, Junior Chamber International, Nigeria (JCI, Nigeria), a grassroots organization promoting healthcare practices in the country. When Ebola struck in 2014, we rallied our membership, the centers for disease control (CDC) and prevention and the country to raise donations for personal protective equipment and healthcare education on prevention of virus spread.

Despite all this effort, ANPA remains far behind in sustaining change in the Nigerian healthcare arena. Our new initiative is to take our expertise to the population in a preventive health education awareness, surgical mission support, collaborative educational planning with the NMA and dialogue with the government in a weeklong package yearly. We will focus on ANPA’s mission “to contribute to improved health care in Nigeria” by directly helping to train health workers while providing free care to the underserved. ANPA has received certification from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) as a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) provider. This allows the direct transfer of knowledge so we can achieve the standards of care we promote.

We shall be providing during the ANPA week in April, 2017 the following:

  • ANPA Medical Missions: ANPA surgical and medical teams will carry out a charitable hands-on medical mission at the First Consultant Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria from 4/22-4/26.
  • ANPA Disease Intervention and Prevention Team (ADIPT ): a medical specialty team of dedicated professionals will be reaching out to appropriate local government areas for invitation to the local communities on discussion of preventable illnesses and management of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, hepatitis B, diabetes, stroke, chronic kidney disease, heart attack, smoking cessation and dental hygiene.
  • ANPA Advocacy:  We shall dialogue with appropriate health agencies in Abuja and leaders in Nigeria on improving healthcare delivery.
  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD): ANPA will embark on its first formal CPD activity in partnership with the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the largest multi-specialty umbrella society of Nigerian physicians. During the NMA national conference in Calabar, ANPA will co-host a one day symposium on “Acute Chest Pain Syndromes”. Our members will   transfer knowledge, improve practice gaps and professional performances to those at the forefront of healthcare delivery in the country. The expertise of ANPA faculty in performing advanced coronary interventions will be an important contribution to this program.

This laudable program needs FUNDING.   About a dozen or more clinicians will commit time and resources to implement our charitable endeavor.  We recognize the importance of contributions that partners make to a project such as described. We ask our friends and business partners to help financially to facilitate our success. We count on your assistance to achieve this goal. Please make your TAX DEDUCTIBLE donations to ANPA, using the link provided:
